CANADA ABSOULTE SOFTWARE OFFERS COMPUTER THEFT GUARANTEE StockHouse USA -- News --8/30/04
VANCOUVER, Aug 30, 2004 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) --
Absolute Software (TSX-VEN: ABT), the leading provider of computer theft recovery and secure asset tracking, today announced that it is offering a $1,000(x) guarantee with its computer theft recovery solutions. Furthermore, Absolute is announcing the general av
ailability throughout North America of Computrace Personal, its computer theft recovery solution for the consumer market. Computrace Personal expands the Computrace product family which has been available to corporate and public-sector users since 1996.
"We're putting our money where our mouth is," said John Livingston, CEO of Absolute Software. "We are approaching our 1,000th computer recovery since 1996, and each year we recover more computers than most of our competitors combined. A large part of our success is due to our Recovery Team - with more than 100 years of combined law-enforcement experience - and their work with over 800 local law-enforcement agencies. If we weren't so confident in our ability to recover our customers' stolen computers, there's no way we'd offer this guarantee."
For a user of Computrace Personal, Absolute offers up to $1,000 for a computer not recovered within 30 days of being reported stolen. For organizations using ComputraceComplete, Absolute will pay up to $1,000 per computer not recovered after 60 days of theft report.(x)
When installed on a computer, Absolute's Computrace software agent runs silently in the background and regularly communicates its location back to Absolute's Monitoring Center. If the computer is stolen, Absolute uses information from the stolen computer and works with local police to get subpoenas and warrants issued to recover the computer.
About three weeks before the end of the University of California at Santa Cruz's spring 2004 semester, Computrace Personal user John Draper had his laptop stolen. "All of my term papers were on the machine, and that was about 4,000 hours of work," he said. "Within 72 hours of reporting it stolen to Absolute, my laptop was recovered. Not only that, Absolute saved me from having to retake a semester of classes! The term papers were still there, and I graduated as scheduled with a bachelor's degree."
In addition to the recovery guarantee, Computrace customers enjoy a much lower than average computer theft rate. The industry average is between 3.5 and 5 percent annually, according to a 2002 Gartner Group study, while Absolute's user base averages a theft rate of less than 1 percent.
Eastern Virginia Medical School officials in spring 2003 used Absolute's theft recovery agent to track three missing computers to the home of a long-time employee. Police recovered the laptops, and the employee ultimately pled guilty to two felony offenses. "It was important to us that she serve jail time to indicate how serious we were in protecting our computer assets. Without Computrace, we'd never have solved the case," said Rose Tate, Director of the Office of Risk Management at Eastern Virginia Medical School. "I'm very pleased with the performance of Absolute's solution and have made it a standard on all of our staff laptops."
List price for Computrace Personal is $99.95 for a three-year license. List price for ComputraceComplete - which provides asset management for remote, mobile and desktop computers, in addition to computer loss-control functionality - is $128.95 for a three-year license. Volume discounts are available.
