CALIFORNIA ARREST MADE IN COMPUTER THEFT OF BANK EXECUTIVE COMPUTER CONTAINING SENSITIVE DATARecordnet.comLODI -- Authorities have arrested a Kyburz man who allegedly stole a laptop computer containing sensitive information from the home of a Bank of Lodi executive.

San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office officials said 114 business and individual customers had been notified of the computer's theft from the Locust Tree Road home of bank Chairman Benjamin Goehring.

John Kevin Dougherty, 37, allegedly stole the laptop in addition to credit cards from Goehring's house Aug. 15, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nelida Stone said.

Authorities arrested Dougherty late Tuesday at a home in the 800 block of San Lucas Avenue in north Stockton. They recovered the computer and other items at another place in the 400 block of Coventry Drive.

Dougherty used Goehring's wife's credit card but was caught apparently before any widespread fraud occurred, Stone said.

The laptop contained customer loan and taxpayer identification information.

Authorities expect to make more arrests in the case, Stone said.

Stone said she didn't know if Goehring was targeted in particular because of his bank position. Authorities, however, believe Dougherty and others were seeking specific sensitive information such as Social Security and bank account numbers, Stone said.

The bank offered customers a change of accounts if they wanted, she said.

Attempts to reach Goehring or other bank officials for comment were unsuccessful.

Authorities also recovered stolen stocks, bonds and checks.

Dougherty is charged with identity theft, burglary, receiving and possessing stolen property, theft by use of credit card, and possession of burglary tools.

He is being held in County Jail in lieu of about $150,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Stockton today.

Stone said Dougherty has a history of committing fraud
