Police: Ex-Students Swipe Computers From Elementary Schools

The Los Lunas school district said it plans to press charges against some former students after police said they were caught stealing school property.
While students in Los Lunas are off on summer vacation, the district said a group of its former students have been busy breaking into elementary schools.
“We get to school in the morning, the place is vandalized, windows are broken in; it’s very frustrating,” Desi Garcia with Los Lunas Schools said.
Burglars have hit two of the district’s elementary schools upwards of five times over the past couple weeks. Computers and video projectors were swiped from the classrooms.
“We do pay a lot of money for this equipment. It’s equipment for our kids, projectors we just installed in rooms for our kids, computer equipment our kids need to do their school work,” Garcia said.

But the burglars left behind clues, including a very unique footprint. One resource officer noticed that one of the culprits' feet turned inwards.

After a stakeout on Saturday, police said they found the person with the unique footprint and a few others who confessed to the crimes.
In total, police said the former students stole more than $20,000 worth of projectors and computers.

“We’ve recovered a lot of this stolen property already,” Garica said.

The five suspects in the burglaries haven’t been charged yet, but the district said it plans to pursue all legal options against them.
The suspects are between the ages of 19 and 21.
