Lawrence police arrested three men they said burglarized the Ivy Tech bookstore of laptop computers.
Police said one of the men arrested worked at the store, 9301 E. 59th St., on the Lawrence campus, and had left a window ajar when he left work.
Police had responded to a call of a burglary in progress at 2 a.m. Sunday, The caller said three men were on a loading dock at the rear of the Ivy Tech building, carrying items to a car nearby.
Police arrived just as the car was pulling away and stopped it at 59th and Lee Road, according to police.
While questioning the driver, the officer spotted at least two computers in their packaging nestled inside a duffel bag in the back seat.
At first the suspects said the computers were a birthday gift from a grandfather. But the grandfather told police that wasn't true.
Later, two of the suspects said the book store employee left a window open and they climbed through it to steal the computers, according to the report.
Thomas Nikolas, 21, Indianapolis, was preliminarily charged with theft and driving on as suspect license.
Byron Harris, 20, Indianapolis, who worked at the store, was preliminarily charged with theft, as was Aaron Steiner, 19, Indianapolis.
