Kenya: Five Quizzed in Msambweni Murder

POLICE in Msambweni have interrogated five people following the Sunday night incident where two guards were killed and offices broken into. Said Mohammed and Mohammed Suleiman were killed in the attack when armed thugs broke into Yehu Microfinance and stole four computers after failing to break the safe. They later proceeded to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission office where they killed a guard who was manning a nearby scrap metal workshop before breaking into the IEBC office and stealing three laptops.
The Mombasa Republican Council national chairman Omar Khan has since denied claims that the proscribed group was involved in the breaking of IEBC offices. District AP commandant Wilson Gichuhi said security has been heightened at the IEBC offices. "We used to have normal patrols in the area but now since this looks like a threat, we have started deploying officers to specifically guard the office," Gichuhi said.
District criminal investigations officer Ethaiba Mwenda said investigations are still going on and five people have recorded statements with the police. This comes as the MRC is pushing for secession. It has voweds to disrupt elections in the Coast region which they claim is not part of Kenya.
Khan said the group was not in any way involved in the breaking of the IEBC offices. "We just heard in news about the breaking and killings but I want to say we are not involved in any violence. We are keenly waiting for the court ruling on our case which is before the Mombasa law courts. Don't associate MRC with every evil incident in the coast region," Khan said.
Meanwhile MRC has called for a three judge bench to hear the case in which they have challenged the validity of IEBC to conduct elections at the Coast. The group has been linked to several incidents that have interrupted the IEBC this year including the disruption of mock elections at St Andrew's school in Malindi a month ago where an AP officer was injured and his gun stolen. They were also linked to an attack in Chonyi where IEBC officials on civic education mission had their vehicle and voting materials burnt.
