Computers, files stolen from offices in Runyenjes
Five government offices in Embu were broken into on Monday night by thieves suspected to have been armed. They stole computers and files from the offices which included the Runyenjes CDF office. Runyenjes MP Cecily Mbarire and Embu East DC Tom Macheneri said nine computers containing vital information and files were stolen during the robbery suspected to have taken place at around 8pm.
Six computers, files bearing information on bursaries allocation and 20 dart boards were stolen from the CDF office, one computer from the Water and Irrigation department office, one computer from the probation department office and one from the agriculture office. Mbarire and Macheneri who visited the office said it looked like an inside job. “The time they took and the ease with which they carried out the theft shows these people knew the offices quite well. They were not in a hurry and could have had a key to the rear metal door where they seem to have entered through,” said the DC.
He said the night guard claimed he normally arrives at the office at 6pm, but was late on Monday due to transport problems. The guard said he arrived about 30 minutes late and entered through the main metal door leading to the reception before switching on the lights. He said and heard movements from the office and called out for help.
The thieves ran through the rear door into the darkness before he saw that they had broken into several rooms whose doors were locked. The district Water office is housed in the same building as the CDF office. The other government offices neighbour to the CDF building and are within the district headquarters compound. Macheneri, who is the District Security Committee chairman said the guard is assisting them with information but has not been arrested as investigations are still underway. This is the second break-in to the CDF office. They were also broken into last December.
