State contract employee charged in computer theft

Edward Lee Covington, 38, was arrested Saturday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Nashville State Community College co-op employee who worked for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security's IT department was arrested over the weekend on felony theft charges.

Authorities arrested Edward Covington, 38, following a two-month investigation.

Covington allegedly sold two laptop computers belonging to the state of Tennessee to an undercover agent at a McDonald's restaurant in Nashville.

The computers were valued at an estimated $1,200.

Covington was charged with theft of property over $1,000, a class D felony, and booked into the Metro jail.

The investigation into the whereabouts of a third computer Covington allegedly sold is ongoing.

Police said Covington had served as a contracted employee with the state since June 2011.
