In all, 10 people have been arrested and 17 stolen computers retrieved during the two-year investigation by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department and the Paterson school district security team, a record that includes the October arrest of a Paterson teacher who was found in possession of a district laptop.

Sheriff Richard Berdnik said in a Wednesday news conference that LoJack tracking software was installed in school district computers, helping to make the arrests and find stolen equipment, and in one case, to track the movements of a suspected burglar.

On Wednesday, the sheriff announced the arrest of Sylvia Victoria Gallego-Zuluaga, 54, a maintenance worker at School 27.

Gallego-Zuluaga was charged with four counts of theft and receiving stolen property. James Smith, head of Paterson school district’s security team and a former city police captain, said she was immediately fired.

“Crimes such as these affect students’ quality of life, their education, and the experience of the children,” Berdnik said.

The partnership was formed about two years ago when a half-dozen laptops went missing from a school overnight.

The tracking software also helped solve a residential burglary. A stolen laptop was taken home by a Paterson city sanitation worker who had found the computer in the trash on his route. The computer was later stolen from his Passaic home along with other belongings, sheriff’s spokesman Bill Maer said.

Police were able to find the computer and arrested the burglar, though his identity wasn’t available at press time. The sanitation worker wasn’t charged.

Mawiyah Britton-Reed, a former teacher at School 25, was arrested in October at her Newark home where the stolen computer was recovered. Britton-Reed, who had been charged with theft and receiving stolen goods, resigned her post and was admitted into a special probation program for first-time offenders. If she completes the program successfully, her theft charge will be dropped.
