A man fleeing police in a stolen vehicle loaded with
stolen computer equipment abandoned his car after he crashed into the sign at the Toronto Police Association building in the city’s east end.

An officer was driving behind the man along Highway 404 when he decided to check on the vehicle’s licence plate and discovered it wasstolen.

“At that point, the guy realized there was a marked car behind him,” said Staff Sgt. Alan Locken. He said the man left the highway at Sheppard Ave. E. and ran a red light trying to get escape the officer.

As the officer pursued him in his own car, the suspect drove into the post of the sign for the Toronto Police Association building on Yorkland Blvd., just south of Sheppard and east of Hwy. 404. The suspect then drove into the driveway of the building, abandoned the car and ran through the rear parking lot where the banquet hall for the association is located. The officer pursued him on a chase behind the building and caught up with him in minutes.

“We arrested the driver and recovered all kinds of stolen computer equipment out of the vehicle,” said Locken, adding that numerous charges were pending. “We’re trying to locate where it came from.”
