US RADIO SHOW ON COMPUTER THEFT

There was a time when the primary reason that computers were high theft items was because they could bring quick cash for the thief.

That hasn't really changed, but when you add the fact that identity theft from a stolen computer makes them an even bigger target, everyone that owns a computer should take some time to access their exposure.

What would happen if your computer was stolen? Is your critical data backed up? Have you told your computer to remember too many passwords to sensitive information? Is your computer a ripe target for a computer thief with ID theft on their mind?

Listen in as the Data Doctors review all of the various exposure points and what you can do before and after a computer has been stolen from your life.

Join us every Saturday from 12:00–2:00PM on FM News/Talk 92.3 as we discuss your computer questions at: 602.277.5827 or e-mail your questions during (or before) the broadcast using the
ask a question page.

Laptop theft highlights data security issues

December 6, 2007

St. Paul, Minn. — A laptop computer with 268,000 Social Security numbers is still missing from a Twin Cities blood bank. Security footage shows the computer being stolen from a Minneapolis building that was preparing for a blood drive on Nov. 28. Memorial Blood Centers, which owns the laptop, is contacting donors potentially affected by the theft.

The news raises questions about the growing role of social security numbers as personal identification and as a key component of identitytheft.

Jon Gordon is the host of Minnesota Public Radio's "Future Tense" program and he's been looking into this case. Gordon spoke with All Things Considered host Tom Crann about the security issues of storing personal data on a portable device.
