Police: Man stole computers from S. Philly school

Police are looking for a man who was caught on camera Monday stealing eight laptops from a South Philadelphia elementary school.

Surveillance cameras around 5:30 p.m. captured the unknown man wheeling a rolling suitcase into the Southwark School on South Ninth Street near Mifflin Street.

Once inside, the suspect allegedly went into a third-floor computer science classroom and took eight Apple MacBook laptop computers. He can be seen on video struggling with the apparently-full suitcase as he walks back down the school's stairs and toward the exit.

Police said the man initially fled into the schoolyard but, once outside, became startled and re-entered the school. He then exited through the Ninth Street doors.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-10-inch to 6-foot-tall black male with a thin build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, black sneakers, a hat and a dark-colored coat with the hood pulled tight.

Anyone with information on the suspect or crime is asked to contact Det. Frank of the South Detective Division at 215-686-3013 or 3014, or to submit an anonymous tip by dialing 215-686-TIPS (8477), texting PPD TIP (773847) or by filling out this online form.

Computers Stolen From University Of Texas

Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 05:23 PM CST

A developing story we're following out of the University of Texas. Almost $55,000 worth of computers were stolen from what was supposed to be a safe storage area in UT's Main Building at 110 Inner Campus Drive.

Page after page of stolen computers are listed in a campus police report. A total of 52 Apple MacBook Pros were taken last Thursday or Friday from a secured first floor storage area in the Main Building. Each of the 13-inch computers is valued at almost $1,000. No word on who paid for the computers or whose hands they were supposed to end up in.

The total value of the stolen computers adds up to $55,000. Campus police are not releasing any additional information because they say this is an ongoing investigation. If you know anything about the incident you are asked to call the police. By Bettie Cross

Police were called to an Albuquerque elementary school early Monday after someone broke inside.
A spokesperson for the district said someone stole two computers from Zia Elementary near Washington and Lomas.
The district believes thieves have been targeting APS schools. In November, officials said burglars got away with more than $500,000 worth of computers in 10 months.
The district has been working on sting operations with Albuquerque police to make arrests in connection to the burglaries.

Non-profit says thieves stole gifts, computers

Organizers look for answers
BASTROP (KXAN) - Members of a non-profit in Bastrop want to know who stole from them and the families they were trying to help.
The leadership of All About Families says thieves took toys and computers from the office and left the place a mess Saturday morning.
Billy and Tiffany Roberts started the organization after the Bastrop Complex Wildfires of 2011.
"If somebody needs something we go and find it for them," said Billy Roberts.
When Billy Roberts went out to their Bastrop office this weekend he knew something was wrong.
He walked inside, saw that there were sheets over the windows, and then he called police.
"There were a lot of toys that were taken. There were some that were already pre-wrapped and in bags," Roberts said. "I noticed when I came through earlier that there were more laptops missing than I had originally thought."
"I've been worried now that our house is next," said Tiffany Roberts. "Maybe they got our personal information from mail or something up here... or we're just going to be next because we're in the vicinity."
Roberts says client information was stored off site, so that information was not compromised.
