ATLANTA COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM WELLS FARGO BANK EMPLOYEEWOWT | Student Loan Info StolenStudent Loan Info Stolen
Personal information on bank computers taken in Atlanta
A UNO student has been warned that she could become a victim of identification theft after several computers that contained her student loan information were stolen.
Senior Courtney Harms has a lot of homework to do, but not just for her classes. She's studying ways to protect her credit after learning her student loan information has been stolen. "Specifically the computer contained your name, address, social security number, and account information." A vendor in Atlanta working for Wells Fargo Lending had three laptops and a desktop stolen in a burglary. The computers contained confidential information on students with education loans like Courtney. She worries her identity may be stolen next. "It really upsets me and really scares me because how long will I pay for this information. This information isn't going to change. Somebody could get this information today and use against me five years from now."
Wells Fargo Bank officials are confident the screens will remain blank on the stolen laptops, that thieves won't be able to access confidential information. "Information is password protected and it will be difficult to access," said Wells Fargo's Kevin Waetke. Wells Fargo will pay 12 months worth of credit monitoring for students like Courtney who may have their loan information compromised. But she'll continue to check her credit for years out of fear her identity has been stolen from a place she thought it would always be safe, a bank.
Because of the ongoing investigation, Wells Fargo won't reveal the number of students with loan information on the stolen computers. At UNO, a financial aide official said he hadn't heard about the theft until a call from Six On Your Side.
The bank has a toll-free number for anyone with a student loan who has received notice that their personal information is contained in the stolen laptops. It's 1-800-687-5120.
