(AP) -- IBM has developed a new technology that it says turns devices like PDAs, digital entertainment receivers and cell phones into portable, secure data centers.

SecureBlue, as it's known, hard-wires the security elements directly into the computer chip as it's being manufactured, rather than relying on off-the-shelf software applications added after the fact.

Big Blue says an important feature of the new technology is that it makes any device in which it is contained tamper-resistant. For example, if your laptop is stolen and someone tries to hack into it, the chip would 'commit suicide' on the spot and erase all the data the device contains.

IBM says it'll be working with consumer electronics companies to get 'SecureBlue' on their products. "
