SIERRA VISTA — A Cochise College student was arrested on theft and trafficking in stolen property charges after he turned himself in to authorities following an investigation into stolen computers at the local campus.
In addition to being a student, Scott May, 40, also served in a work study program as a computer lab aid, according to Liz Manring, public information officer for Cochise College. One of May’s duties was to account for the equipment in computer labs and classrooms.
May was arrested Monday afternoon at the Sierra Vista Police Station following an investigation that began April 9, when two computer towers were first reported stolen from a classroom at the college, according to a probable cause statement submitted with his arrest.
Using software installed on the computer, authorities were able to track the equipment to a residence in Sierra Vista.
On Friday, April 13, search warrants were executed in the 200 block of Sheila Lane and the 500 block of South 7th Street. Among the items recovered from these searches were four computer towers. Among the various items and equipment observed in one of the residences was a Epson projector. After checking with college staff, it was determined that each of the computer towers and the projector were the property of Cochise College.
The value of the stolen items is estimated at $4,500, according to the probable cause statement.
May was booked into the Cochise County Jail and later released after posting a $10,000 bond.
