Computer error hits Glasgow City Council
Published: 1 hr ago
BUNGLING staff at Scotland’s biggest council have “lost” nearly 750 computers.
Glasgow City Council can’t account for 256 laptops and a staggering 487 desktop PCs.
And councillors will be told this week that theft of council IT gear from a “secure area” is “well organised, systematic and on a significant scale”.
The figures come from an internal probe launched after two unencrypted laptops — with bank details of 17,000 people and businesses — were stolen from a third-floor office in the City Chambers in May.
It is thought that none of the missing desktop PCs are encrypted — meaning the data on them could have fallen into criminal hands — and could land the Labour-controlled council a six-figure fine from the UK’s Information Commissioner.
Councillors will be presented with a report tomorrow.
Graeme Hendry, leader of the council’s opposition SNP group, said: “To lose two laptops is worrying but to lose nearly 750 is beyond belief.
“It would seem Glasgow’s idea of looking after its resources involves ticking boxes rather than genuine management of equipment.”
A council spokesman said yesterday: “What this report shows is that for a number of years the council family has been poor at keeping accurate records of its IT equipment.
“We’re now dealing with that situation and with the unencrypted IT equipment.”
