Cancer Equipment Stolen at Zambia’s Biggest Hospital
The theft is threatening operations at the Cancer diseases Hospital section in Lusaka which have ground to a halt after thieves Thursday morning between 01 A.M and 05 A.M broke-in.
According to the State owned but PF controlled ZNBC, thieves broke into the newly built facility which was a milestone achievement for the MMD government to steal the equipment.
Cancer Diseases Hospital Executive Director Kennedy Lishimpi and Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Solomon Jere have confirmed the theft.
Dr. Lishimpi says thieves have stolen computers connected to radiotherapy machines and C.T scanners.
Cancer patients, according to Dr Lishimpi, will not be attended to until new computers with specific software are bought and re-installed. There are fears this could take more that three months.
Police say two security guards from Armcor who were on duty have been picked up to assist with investigations.
Dr Jere believes the theft was an inside job and the guards Evidence Chilufya, a female aged 25 of John Laing Township and Steven Matoka, 38, of Kuku compound, will be handy in the investigations.
