OREGON COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM HUMANE SOCIETY BendBulletin.com Burglars stole about $5,000 worth of equipment from the Humane Society of the Ochocos in Prineville sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

About $368 in cash and checks was also taken from the cash register, which was destroyed by the burglars, said Telena Smith, shelter manager. One bottle of animal penicillin was lifted, too.

A short-hair female calico cat, Charity, who roamed freely around the front office, was missing Sunday morning, Smith said. The cat may have jumped out of the front window, which was forced open by the burglars.

The other 80 animals housed at the shelter — including cats, dogs, rabbits and rodents — were still caged and appeared to be fine, Smith said.

"I never understand why they hit the nonprofits," she said.

It was the second burglary at the shelter since it opened in 1995, Smith said.

Among the equipment stolen by the burglars was a New Trend computer and a 15-inch monitor; a Canon countertop copy machine; an HP office ink jet printer and fax; a telephone with an answering machine; and an HP digital camera.

Smith said operations at the shelter will be slowed down as a result of the missing equipment.
