TEXAS SCHOOL LAPTOPS STOLEN DallasNews.com | News for Dallas, Texas | Irving News: "Security worries
Trustee Randy Stipes, who voted against the purchase, said his concern was not over the cost or models but over what protection there was for the old laptops – Compaqs – that would be loaned out as replacements.
'I never did get a clear answer on that,' he said.
Overall, he said, he liked the laptop program.
'I think the teachers and kids have gotten a lot of valuable use out of them,' he said.
He said he was bothered by the loss of laptops. About 150 computers were stolen last year.
'That concerns me that there are so many lost or stolen or replaced each year,' he said.
Officials are now using tags that provide a toll-free number to call if the computers end up in pawnshops. Ms. Owen said the district has security cameras on campuses to record thefts. Other security measures are being considered. "
