TEXAS COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM AREA SCHOOLSKAUZ - School Break-ins Costs the District MoneyDuring the past several months Wichita Falls ISD has had to deal with a big problem. And it’s not school finance.

We're talking break-ins! Thieves have taken several high price items including computers, televisions and digital cameras. This problem has cost students educational tools and taxpayer’s money.

Burglars broke into Bonham and Kate Haynes Elementary Schools. Those break-ins have become an unnecessary expense for the district.

Kate Haynes Elementary Principal Mickey Galyean says the crooks stole a TV, a computer monitor and a computer box and if that wasn't enough they even ripped off a teacher's refrigerator.

“It’s tough you work to get some things. I know a couple of the items stolen were a computer a teacher worked in the summer to get on her own. That was stolen. Those things are irreplaceable. It’s really tough!” says Kate Haynes Principal Mickey Galyean

District Chief Financial Officer Ken Parker says there's not a separate budget set aside to replace stolen or damaged items.

“Normally the items take have to be replaced or purchased again out of the budget for the schools. So it does have a direct effect on schools and the budgets,” says Ken Parker, WFISD CFO.

Parker says so far this school year, the district has spent $15,000 to replace the stolen items. As far as damaged doors or windows, that expense is in the maintenance budget.

Parker and Galyean agree the thieves are stealing not only from taxpayers but from students.

“Frustrating for me but more frustrating for the principals and the teachers that have these items missed that they're no longer available to help their students in the education process,” says Parker.

“You tell them it’s pointless. To break into a school you’re stealing from the children. But I don't think that makes any difference to them!” says Galyean
