EPHRAIM — A tip led police to six locations in Salt Lake, Utah and Sanpete counties within about five hours early Sunday, resulting in recovery of more than $20,000 in electronic equipment and other goods stolen from Snow College.
Bob Wright, director of public safety at Snow, and Ron Rasmussen, Ephraim police chief, displayed the recovered items at a press conference Tuesday at Ephraim City Hall.
The items included computers, computer monitors, wall-mounted projectors from classrooms, DVD players and even a motorized scooter.
Wright said all electronic equipment that had been reported missing from the college since the first of the year was recovered except two items that apparently had been sold on e-Bay.
No arrests have been made yet, but Wright said the Sanpete County attorney was screening the case and planned to issue arrest warrants or summons for three adults and two juveniles. He said one of the adults was a current Snow student and one a former student.
The tip from a confidential informant came in Saturday. Wright and Rasmussen obtained a search warrant and headed north, arriving at a Magna residence about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. They recovered one stolen item there.
Information obtained during the search led the officers to a computer party at the Olpin Union at the University of Utah. They arrived about 3 a.m. About 40 people apparently had permission to stay in the Union overnight playing computer games and browsing the Internet, said Wright. At the party, they located one of the suspects in the Snow thefts and recovered a projector and a large computer monitor. University of Utah police assisted in the recovery.
At about 4:30 a.m., the officers arrived at a residence in Eagle Mountain, Utah County, "where a great deal of property was recovered," Wright said.
Based on information gathered on the Wasatch Front, Wright and Rasmussen returned to Sanpete County, where they recovered additional property at an Ephraim residence and the rest of the things they were looking for at two Gunnison residences.
Wright added that the investigation had given him information about how thieves managed to enter locked campus buildings and take expensive equipment.
"Now that we know what was going on from the crook's standpoint, we can tighten up," he said
