The computer screw-up that hobbled Royal Bank of Canada over the past week could happen to you. In fact it's more likely to — and on a more massive scale, at least in relative terms.
When a manager or professional experiences a computer drive failure, or the loss or theft of a machine, the consequences can be disastrous. Imagine the impact that losing patient files and billing information would have on a dental office, for example. Even if the data are recoverable, it's likely going to take an inordinate amount of time and money to get the operation back to where it was.
At moments like these, someone always asks, "Have you backed up your data?" Big organizations such as RBC usually have systems to automate backups, making life a lot easier for individual employees. But for mid-sized firms, small or home offices and consumers, the typical sheepish reply to that question is ..... no. Let's face it: backups are boring and a hassle to boot. Wouldn't you rather be flossing?
Top it off with a lack of knowledge and awareness. Even those of us who routinely put new software on our computers, adjust performance and set up peripherals such as handhelds, music players and printers, often have no clue of the best way to protect our precious data...
