Vadodara, February 1: Theft of computer peripherals and accessories from the office of a senior treasury officer of the district treasury has brought all 94 staffers under police scanner.
‘‘I noticed a CD writer, computer speakers, a printer and a new colour cartridge missing from my office last Monday. We thought that the equipment was being used by someone else in the department. We registered an FIR in this regard this Monday,’’ said senior treasury officer D H Anajwala.
As per police records, the theft amount stands at Rs 19,440. Officials at the treasury department said that no data or costly equipment went missing.
‘‘After 6.30 pm, a peon uses four locks to secure the office and deposits the keys with a guard in the basement,’’ said sources.
The police are investigating whether an insider is involved in the case. ‘‘Someone could just walk in and forge documents or steal it to file a false claim for money from some Government department or the other. So, we are being very particular about this case,’’ said Assistant Commissioner of Police (A-division) R J Pargi. The police have interrogated and recorded statements of four peons and two other Class IV employees of the department on Tuesday.
Following the theft, the department is planning to increase security measures in the office. ‘‘We are thinking of sealing individual locks with paper everyday. We may close off the rear entrance from the basement that leads directly to my chamber and put away the keys to my chamber somewhere else,’’ said Anajwala
