STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma State officials are developing new student identification numbers after the theft of a laptop computer that has Social Security numbers of more than 37-thousand current and former students.
OSU is accelerating plans replace use of Social Security numbers with 8-digit student I-D numbers.
The school has been working to implement the new ID numbers within two years, but now hopes to have the new system in place by 2006.
A laptop computer used during job placement seminars for students was reported missing April 12th. OSU spokesman Gary Shutt says there have been no reports of information stored on the computer being used illegally.
