Police were yesterday guarding Nairobi's Starehe Boys' Centre following the theft of a computer on Saturday. They were also investigating the staff.

Area administration police chief Josephat Kinyua said. "We suspect that the theft was an internal job. A visitor wouldn't have known where the laptop was. It must have been somebody who knew where it was."

All the staff houses, including those outside the compound, had been searched, he said.

Mr Kinyua said that after the burglary was reported to his office at 9.30am on Saturday, the area was sealed off.

Four plain-clothes officers were guarding the school and manning the main gate with instructions to record the registration numbers of incoming and outgoing vehicles, he said.
