Police are searching for 16 laptop computers valued at about $32,000 that were apparently stolen from a storage room in Cline Hall at Franklin College.
At first, college administrators had hoped the computers had been borrowed, according to a Franklin Police Department report released Tuesday.
The administrators could not find any evidence they were borrowed and notified campus security at 3:40 p.m. Monday, according to the report.
Now it's being treated as a crime.
Terry Wethington, head of college security, notified city police that the computers were taken between July 6 and Monday from the storage room just off Room 111.
The computers were identified as MPC Transport T2200s.
There was no forced entry to Room 111, and it was secure, police said.
The storage room, according to police, has a deadbolt that was found unlocked.
The computers were taken from a cabinet-type rack, police said.
The case is now in the hands of city police detectives, Wethington said Tuesday.
