Sixteen computers were stolen from the Marengo Valley Elementary School over the weekend and school employees are still checking to see if anything else is missing, Superintendent Ken Kasinski said Tuesday.
The computers include 13 laptops and three desktop PCs, he said.
Kasinski said he reported the incident to the Ashland County Sheriff's Department, and the district is working with Detective Sgt. Ken Johnson.
Johnson said Tuesday that the school's custodial staff was working in the building Friday and had locked up the room where the computers were stolen after cleaning the room.
"They were sure that it was secured at 2:30 p.m.," Johnson said.
At some point on Friday, someone unlocked a window in the room leading outside.
"We think it was left open for the purpose of reentering," he said.
Whoever stole the computers knew the window was unlocked and reached in to pry it open before entering the room, he said.
"We have some leads in the case. We have some fingerprints," Johnson said. "We are following up on those leads."
School staff members are double checking the school's inventory to make sure nothing else is missing, Kasinski said.
"We're going through everything in that building," Kasinski said. "We're starting at one end of the building and inventorying everything to the other end."
If anyone has information about this case, they can contact Johnson at 715-685-7643.
