BRIDGEPORT — It started with a brazen scheme to steal computers right off the desks of Sikorsky Aircraft workers who were out on their lunch break.
When federal agents started poking around, the thief, Calvin Mackey, threatened to kill anyone who implicated him.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Janet C. Hall sent him to prison for 2 years for wire fraud, followed by three years' probation.
Mackey, 34, formerly of Bridgeport, also must repay Sikorsky $50,000 for the computers he stole while working for Computer Sciences Corp., a subcontractor for the Stratford-based helicopter manufacturer.
Prosecutors said what he stole was worth much more than the value of the hardware.
The computers held sensitive contract information, sales orders — even a software program that cost the Stratford-based helicopter manufacturer $3.8 million to produce.
"The actual loss to the government, Sikorsky and Computer Science Corp. actually is greater," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Kahn.
But she said as a result of the plea bargain, Sikorsky agreed to accept $2,500 for only the hardware of 20 computers stolen by Mackey.
Hall also ordered Mackey not to have contact with any of his co-defendants, Shawn Smith, 31, of Stratford, and Leonard Mastri, 43, of Bridgeport, who formerly owned Computer Guys.
That's the Bridgeport business that bought and resold some of the computers Mackey stole.
Mastri cooperated with the FBI and Defense Criminal Investigative
