Real-Time Alerting tracks down thieves on college campuses

Concord, N.H. – September 26, 2005 – Bradford Networks , developer of Security and Policy Enforcement Solutions for Enterprise Networks, today announced a new application that is integrated into Bradford Campus Manager, which will track, locate, and identify stolen computer equipment.

As laptops become more popular on college campuses and in enterprise networks, so does the unfortunate problem of theft. Notebook and laptop computers are very portable and become easy targets when left alone on a library table, lab desk, or even an unlocked dorm room. Because they are small and portable, they have been difficult to recover as well.

The new real-time alert feature within Bradford Campus Manager can be easily configured to always be on the lookout for a device that has been reported missing. If an individual attempts to connect a stolen device onto the network, Bradford Campus Manager will immediately recognize the device as stolen and proactively alert the IT staff. The location of where the device was connected will be flagged and often can lead right to the person who stole the equipment or possibly bought it after it was stolen.

In the case when theft does occur, it acts like an ongoing electronic police surveillance system, always on the look-out for that particular device.”

When deployed as the security and policy enforcement solution in a network, Bradford Campus Manager is uniquely positioned to take on the role of security cop and function as a real-time alerting tool. As users connect to the network, a host of valuable information about the device, user, and connection is stored in a relational database. The user information is used to enforce network policies, as well as locate users by name, MAC, IP, location, and other attributes. Because Bradford Campus Manager knows the details of each device on the network and can control access of each device, it is an effective tool in identifying stolen equipment and sending real-time alerts upon detection.
