800-pound safe stolen from school

By Anna Mathews, Carroll County News

BERRYVILLE - Thieves dragged off an 800-pound safe from the Berryville Middle School last week after entering the building and breaking into a middle school office where the safe was kept.

The locked safe contained food service money, two credit cards, checks ready to be mailed, and other items, police say.

The American Security safe, with a combination lock, was estimated to weigh about 800 pounds. It was dragged off sometime between the hours of 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5, and 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 6.

There was no forced entry into the building, police say, indicating that a door was likely left unlocked, or the thieves had a key.

More than one person was believed to be involved because of the weight of the safe. Drag marks were discovered in the hallway.

Also, the thieves used a pry bar to gain entry into other locked offices, classrooms and the cafeteria, police reported. Taken were a palm pilot, keys to soda pop coolers, and a laptop computer from the careers classroom.

Anyone who may have noticed suspicious activity at the school the night of the burglary, is asked to call Berryville police.

Authorities say the thieves will likely need a cutting torch to gain entry into the safe.

This theft followed on the heels of another that occurred several weeks ago when the agri building was broken into and a laptop computer was taken.
