DALLAS SURVEY SAYS.................GUARD THAT LAPTOP AT THE OFFICE CREDANT TECHNOLOGIES SURVEY ON STOLEN LAPTOPS UNCOVERS STARTLING RESULTSSurvey Says ... Guard That Laptop at the Office! CREDANT(R) Technologies Survey on Stolen Laptops Uncovers Startling ResultsDALLAS, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ --

The current epidemic of stolen laptops and
resulting data breaches throughout the world is most prevalent in some
unexpected places, according to a new survey by CREDANT(R) Technologies, the
market leader in data security and encryption software for mobile users. The
survey results undoubtedly will send chills down the spines of anyone who
keeps any sensitive information on their laptops
.
"Everyone knows to guard their devices when they're traveling, but the
results we found about the office were quite shocking," said Bob Heard,
CREDANT Technologies CEO. "What we discovered were corporate environments
that are careless and even reckless with laptops, many of which contain
crucial company and personal data. And the ease with which these laptops are
being stolen in the workplace is stunning."
The CREDANT survey found that the office is the most common place laptops
are stolen, making up for 29 percent of all laptop disappearances world-wide.
Some respondents to the survey noted that their stolen office laptops were
super-glued to their desks, physically locked into place and even secured with
a lock and cable. The office finding particularly is disturbing in light of
the fact that 87 percent of respondents report having email on their stolen
laptops, and 67 percent report they had other business information stored as
well. And most disturbing of all, 90 percent report that their stolen laptop
contained sensitive and confidential corporate data that was not intended for
public view.
The CREDANT laptop survey also found that nearly three quarters of the
stolen laptops did not meet regulatory compliance requirements for data
encryption, mainly the stringent privacy regulations dictated by Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), California Senate Bill
1386 and other regulations. Twenty-one percent of respondents report they
used no security measures or encryption of any kind on their stolen laptops.
Only 10 percent of respondents report using a full-disk encryption security
product. All the signs point to a corporate environment that is unprepared
and ill-equipped to deal with the implications of rampant laptop theft.
"When you apply these survey results to everyday corporate life, you
realize that millions of dollars and the future of these companies are at
stake. Even a single security breach can send stock prices plummeting," said
Heard. "Eighty-two percent of all our survey respondents claim they never
recovered their stolen laptop. That's sensitive information floating out
there in the wrong hands, potentially with the ability to destroy the trust of
its clients and topple a corporation."
Experts in mobile security, CREDANT Technologies' award-winning security
platform encrypts data stored on laptops, tablet PCs, and external storage
devices while controlling data synchronization to smartphones and PDAs. The
intelligence-based encryption protects only the most vital information,
minimizing common data corruption and recovery issues and productivity losses
that are common with older encryption solutions. CREDANT Mobile Guardian also
automatically detects whenever other PDAs or smartphones attempt to access
your network, ensuring that your data is protected from unwanted intruders.
The CREDANT laptop survey was conducted in June 2005, with emails sent to
nearly seventeen thousand Global 2000 professionals. Two hundred and eighty
three respondents from around the world qualified for and completed all the
questions, making up the final outcome of the survey.
