Knoxville (WVLT) – If you have been a patient at UT Medical Center, you could have had your personal information stolen.
The University of Tennessee Medical Center is notifying patients of a stolen computer from their billing department.
The stolen computer has already been reported to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department; however, this computer contained the names, social security numbers and birth dates of nearly 4,000 people who had received services at the medical center in 2003.
If you receive this letter you need to notify one of the credit bureaus and place a Fraud Alert on your credit file.
Once you’ve placed a Fraud Alert on your file, you should request a copy of your credit report to review for suspicious activity, like inquiries from companies you didn’t contact, accounts you didn’t open and debts on accounts you can’t explain.
You should also check to make sure your personal information on your report is correct and hasn’t been changed.
If you notice any suspicious activity, contact your local enforcement office to file a report.
