TEXAS COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM MISD SCHOOL DISTRCT BUILDINGMcKinney Courier-Gazette OnlineEquipment stolen from MISD building
By DANNY GALLAGHER McKinney Courier-Gazette

Someone stole more than $7,000 in computer equipment from the McKinney Independent School District less than one hour after it was delivered to the administration building, MISD and McKinney Police officials said.

McKinney Police Capt. Randy Roland and MISD Spokesman Cody Cunningham confirmed the Oct. 5 theft of six Cisco computer ports. The equipment was stolen from the MISD Administration Building on 1 Duvall Street.

Cunningham said the equipment was last seen just after delivery was made to the building's receiving area that morning.

”It's a contained place,“ Cunningham said. ”It's not like it was just out on the dock. It's a secure location.“

An employee saw the computers delivered by the mail service. About an hour later, another employee noticed them missing. The district subsequently filed a theft report.

Roland said the theft is still under investigation. Cunningham could not released any additional information until the police department's investigation is complete.

Cunningham said the district is looking into the security of the receiving area to make sure thefts don't occur there again.

”It's always frustrating, but at the same time, we want to investigate what may have happened and look at our district processes so that this doesn't happen again. We're looking at the security of that particular area,“ Cunningham said.

”The reality is, when you work in a large organization, you can still have a secure area that's only available to people who have access, and still run into problems. It's unfortunate, but we feel confident we will be able to determine who [is] responsible.“

Cunningham said security is a concern for the school district even before the Dowell Middle School break-in that occurred prior to the start of the school year.

”[Security is] something we're always analyzing,“ Cunningham said. ”We feel confident in the security of our campuses and administration building, but that's something that's an ongoing evaluation, and we'll always have to be analyzing our facilities, training staff and things like that, and continuing to look for opportunities to improve security.“
