Stolen computer equipment from UVSC triggers inquiry

DAILY HERALD

Five ceiling-mounted computer projectors, each worth $2,500, were taken from classrooms in the Liberal Arts Building at Utah Valley State College Saturday -- after the building had been locked up for the night.

The school's police department is investigating the theft, and has some good leads, said Derek Hall, UVSC spokesman.

"We have security in the building," Hall said, of the liberal arts building. "No alarms were sounded. We're trying to figure out what happened there. There was no forced entry, no vandalism."

He said projectors have been taken before, but never five on the same night.

They're part of an audio-video teaching system, and are difficult to remove from the ceiling. Most of the 60 classrooms in the building have the system.

"Security measures on college campuses are an interesting thing," Hall said. "They are a public space. Tens of thousands of people walk through every day. Thefts do happen."

He said school officials met Wednesday to review security measures.

"We will be making needed changes to ensure it doesn't happen again," Hall said.
