CARY, NC - ByteWyze Computer Services, a company offering technical outsourcing, network services, computer repair and upgrade services, printer support, and data and phone cabling, is helping the Association for Computer Security Day (ACSD) promote the importance of computer security. Computer Security Day was established in 1988 and is celebrated on November 30 of every year. It is an annual event that reminds computer users to take the appropriate actions to protect their computer, programs, and data.
One of ByteWyze's services is providing clients data and systems protection. Says Stephen Arnold, ByteWyze Chief Technical Officer, "There are three keys that a company can take to minimize threats to their company's systems and data. They are awareness, deterrence, and restriction. Unfortunately, one key alone is not enough to protect your systems. That's why we try to help companies find the right combination of keys that will offer the maximum amount of protection." Every year, more than 1,000 organizations from all over the world officially participate in Computer Security Day. Over the years, the ACSD has obtained official proclamations for Computer Security Day from many state and local governments. From Algeria to Zimbabwe, Computer Security Day reminds everyone to follow proper computer security procedures.
ACSD executive director Lee Ohringer says, "The effective use of computers can give you an edge over your competition, but the disclosure of your information or the loss of its integrity can destroy that edge and possibly destroy your business. Simple errors and computer viruses need to be controlled and dealt with properly if you hope to survive and prosper. Everyone who uses a computer, whether at home or for business, should take appropriate actions to protect their computer, computer programs, and data."
To help everyone celebrate Computer Security Day, ByteWyze offers the following security tips that every company should implement in order to keep their computers and data safe:
1. Make sure that your server(s) is in a locked and secured location.
2. Give people access only to data that is pertinent to performing their daily tasks.
3. Change passwords on a regular basis - every 60 to 90 days is recommended.
4. Passwords should be at least eight characters in length and should include UPPER- and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters (#, &, ^). Do not use words found in the dictionary or personal information such as a pet's name, child's name, birthdays, etc.
5. Never write your passwords down or share them with anyone.
6. When an employee is terminated, immediately disable (not delete) the user id and password for that particular employee.
7. Back up your data daily on-site and off-site.
8. Never disable your anti-virus software and make sure you use the latest anti-virus definition tables.
9. If you have extremely sensitive data, install software that will monitor and track the activity of each employee's computers.
10. Make sure your firewalls are installed and configured properly in order to protect your data from external invasion.
Adds Ohringer, "As more companies join us in promoting Computer Security Day, we hope that everyone will begin to realize the importance of keeping their systems safe. To maintain that environment, it is important to continue computer security awareness throughout the year and not just for one day."
