Theft has become one of biggest police issues on campus. Every week, one can read in the Police Briefs about the rampant theft that took place in dorms or on campus over the week. This week a laptop, next week a jacket? it will continue to go on and on as long as the University is still accepting students.

Why has theft been such a big mover on the crime list? How is it that people are leaving themselves open to such crimes, and are not taking more precautions to avoid this? Worse, how many people are not reporting the thefts taking place? You can bet that number would be substantial.

There are many things both commuter and residential students can do to protect their belongings. Locks on doors and on computers and other personal items are a good start. Keeping your door closed and locked, especially if the room is empty, is essential to the prevention of room theft. Keeping cars parked in a safe location with doors locked can help prevent things from being stolen from cars. Walking around campus during daylight and protecting yourself helps prevent personal theft.

So why is theft still continuing at Millersville?

Better yet, why are people stealing?

Some people have nothing better to do than mess with other people, or take things that don't belong to them. If someone flaunts a new Apple laptop around, they will catch someone's eye. If a student does not keep their valuables in a safe place, they are in danger of having it swiped. People who steal are taking advantage of you, and you do not have to put yourself in this position.

Students need to understand that, while college is fun, it is not a perfect and safe bubble. Precautions must always be taken against both theft and for personal safety, making mention of the intrusion that occurred in Hull hall over the week. Just because you are friends with everyone in your dorm does not mean you will not be taken advantage of and violated or stolen from. Life is not a big party. You must always be apprehensive. If you leave your door open and unlocked, you are asking to be stolen from. If you don't lock your car doors or leave your windows down, you are leaving opportunity for damage and theft.

The key to preventing being a target this semester is easy. Simply be cautious and aware at all times of your surroundings. Do not be so trustworthy, because not everyone can be trusted. Keeping belongings locked up and hidden help to prevent theft. Taking simple precautions can keep you from being in the next Police Briefs.
