State investigates possible identity theft

State officials are investigating whether any personal identity information was stolen when thieves broke into a state office building in Springfield.
Damage from the weekend break-in was extensive, and 12 computers were taken, said Springfield Police Sgt. Rick Putnam.
The leased building houses Department of Human Services' self-sufficiency and vocational rehabilitation programs, a Department of Justice child support office, and a small state Employment Division operation.
Officials were still taking inventory by the middle of this week and had not yet determined what data was stored on the computers.
"It could be county, region, statewide. At this point, there is more of an unknown than there is a known on what has happened," said Department of Human Services spokeswoman Patricia Feeny. "Everything is password-protected."
If state officials determine personal information was stolen, they will immediately notify potentially affected clients, Feeny said.
