An office boy, who robbed a reputed software company of lakhs of rupees worth of computer parts in February, was caught when the police cornered his accomplice for a completely different crime.

Kailash Buddha Yadav, 23, joined IIHT Ltd located at Marol-Maroshi Road as an office boy. After working for a few days, Kailash hatched a plan to steal the office computers. Since he did not know anything about computers, he enlisted two of his friends for the job.

On February 26, Kailash, Govind Bhanu Yadav (35) and Mohammed Ishrat (18) broke into the office located on the sixth floor of Silver Arcade building, after the it had closed for the day.

While Kailash guarded the door, Govind and Mohammed opened the computer cabinets and took out the Random Access Memory (RAM) chips and the hard disks of over 18 computers.

When the other employees discovered the theft in the morning, they had trouble placing Kailash since nobody knew his whereabouts as he had been employed without any verification of his residence or past experience.

“The other employees in the office did not even know Kailash’s surname. Nobody knew where he stayed as the company had no documents to prove his residence,” Assistant Inspector A D’souza of MIDC police station said.

However, in May, Govind was arrested in connection with a chain-snatching case by the R A Kidwai Marg police. During interrogations, he confessed to the IIHT robbery, leading the police to Kailash and Ishrat.

He was then handed over to the MIDC police.

“We recovered computer spare parts worth over Rs 9.41 lakh from the three, and also found a laptop they had stolen from the same office,” Senior Inspector Dilip Suryawanshi of MIDC police station said.
