ALABAMA COMPUTER STOLEN FROM KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PROGRAM AT UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM http://www.wtvm.com/Global/story.asp?S=5054735&nav=8fap
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A computer stolen from the kidney transplant program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham contained confidential information on nine-thousand-800 donors, organ recipients and potential recipients.
No arrests have been made in the theft of the machine, which university officials said could contain names, Social Security numbers and medical information on people involved in the program.
The school is offering one year of free credit monitoring to anyone whose personal data was compromised to protect them from possible identity theft.
U-A-B spokesman L.G. Blanchard said the computer was taken from a locked office in February, but those affected were not notified until earlier this month because it took months for school officials to reconstruct the missing database.
He said there is no evidence so far that the stolen information has been used and he said additional physical security measures have been put into place to prevent similar thefts from occurring.
