More than 2,000 items of combat gear were ripped off from Canada's military in the last year, but the Department of National Defence isn't worried that civilian thieves might be passing themselves off as soldiers.
Lance Anderchuk, a spokesman for DND, said most of the clothing and kits went AWOL because of forgetful reservists who didn't return their gear.
Government spending documents show DND took a $125,204 hit from the stolen gear, and only $5,667 is expected to be recovered.
DND also recorded thefts of 11 weapons and accessories worth $10,733, 16 pieces of telecommunication equipment worth $29,497, nine desktop computers worth $14,939 and five laptops valued at $17,350.
On the department's list of losses due to "accidental destruction or damage" was $15.2 million for military equipment. Another 8,174 lost or damaged pieces of combat gear cost the department $687,629
