Computers were stolen, trophy cases were broken and classrooms were ransacked at a South Side elementary school over the weekend, Chicago police said this morning.
Police received 'several burglar alarm calls' around 1 a.m. Sunday from Hendricks Community Academy, located at 4316 S. Princeton Ave. in the city's Canaryville neighborhood. But the vandalism wasn't discovered until about 10 p.m., police said."
Up to 10 Dell computers were taken from the school and multiple display cases were damaged, Deering District Lt. Thomas Shouse said. Glass was found shattered from classroom doors on all three floors, he said. Classrooms were also ransacked.
Police did not know how the burglar or burglars entered the school, Shouse said. There were no signs of forced entry.
The lieutenant said there was a surveillance camera located in the main office, but it was either damaged or stolen.
No one was in custody this morning, and police could not provide descriptions of possible suspects. Wentworth Area detectives were investigating.
A Chicago Public Schools spokesman could not provide any information about the crime this morning. Representatives from the school could not be reached for comment.
