RHODE ISLAND COMPUTERS STOLEN TO HIDE FRAUD EVIDENCE Eyewitness News - Police say office workers tried to hide million dollar fraud:
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Police say an office manager at a South Providence university funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars into her own pocketbook-then tried to hide the theft by staging a break-in.
Patricia Lemois of the University Otolaryngology is charged in the scheme, which allegedly continued for about three years.
Police say the 56-year-old Lemois paid herself an extra 800-thousand dollars. They say she also funneled more than 200-thousand to another employee and 100-thousand to a maintenance worker.
They say when Lemois learned the office was going to hire a financial supervisor, she arranged a phony break-in. Lemois and another worker allegedly stole computers that had evidence of the thefts.
But police say they didn't get a backup copy of payroll records. Lemois was charged last month with four felonies. She was released on ten thousand dollars bail last week.
