Computer theft angers Numsa
By Duncan Reyneke
THE Port Elizabeth office of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) had five hard drives with union information stolen this week.
Numsa regional secretary Irvin Jim said the only reason he could think of for burglars to target the hard drives of the local office would be politically motivated. The office has reported the matter to the police.
Jim said: “A similar thing happened on the eve of the Cosatu national conference earlier this year, when our offices were broken into and someone stole my laptop. This time it was most definitely the work of professionals though, as the phone lines and other important cables were all cut, so as not to alert the security company.”
He said: “Our union is extremely angry about the persistent break-ins at our Newton Park office.”
Jim said that nothing in the office had been taken except for the hard drives of five of the computers. “What information are they looking for? Why are they targeting Numsa?”
Jim said the burglaries brought to mind apartheid-type scenarios, in which trade unions had their files or computers ransacked. “I really hope we aren’t starting to slip back into such a situation. This brings back bad memories.”
