Computers containing customer information stolen from water district

By: North County Times -

ESCONDIDO -- Two computers containing the names and credit card numbers of some 500 customers were stolen from the Rincon Water District during an early-morning burglary Tuesday at the district's office, authorities said.

Thieves smashed a window and took the computers, which were used in customer service, from the office on the 1900 block of North Iris Lane at about 3:30 a.m., said Darlene Lynn, the district's interim general manager.

The computers, which are password protected, contained some customer information, but not the birthdates or Social Security numbers of customers, Lynn said.

The district services about 7,600 customers in San Marcos, Escondido and parts of San Diego, but only a small percentage of customers pay by credit card and had that information on the computers, Lynn said.

The district is calling and sending letters to all customers as a precautionary measure, Lynn said.

The district recommends that credit card customers immediately contact their card provider. Customers wishing to continue the credit card program may call the district office at (760) 745-5522 or toll free at (866) 762-7842."
