Three computers and three flat-screen monitors were stolen from the Elkins Public Library in Canterbury during the weekend before Christmas.

Library Director Sue LeClair said she stopped into the library to pick up a DVD on Christmas Eve and saw that three of the computers and monitors were missing.

State Police Sgt. Ian Berkeley said that the investigation is ongoing and that detectives are continuing to follow leads.

Serial numbers for the computers were entered into the National Crime Information Center database as stolen goods and could be traced if the police in other communities find the items, Berkeley said.

Nothing else was taken. A collection box full of cash for the Tur family, whose Canterbury home burned down last week, sat untouched, LeClair said.

LeClair said she walked around the building that night and discovered a screen and a flowerpot on the ground. It looked as if someone had come through a window, she said.

"It appears that someone came in before when we were open and unlocked the window," LeClair said. "Nothing was forced, and we certainly don't open the windows this time of year."

The library closed the afternoon of Dec. 22 and was also closed the following day, LeClair said.

The library does not have any security cameras or burglary alarms.

The theft happened sometime Friday night, Saturday or Sunday. Berkeley said that there were no witnesses besides library workers but that detectives plan to speak with other individuals.

LeClair said the computers are covered by the town's insurance. She has already ordered new machines.

"But it makes me nervous if we have brand-new computers in here and no alarm system," she said.

Anyone with information about the theft is encouraged to call the state police at 271-3333.
