CENTRAL JERSEY: Alleged office burglar indicted
A Jersey City has been indicted on 26-counts of burglary and theft charges in Somerset and Middlesex counties stemming from a crime spree in which he would 'blend in' with his surroundings and steal computer equipment from office complexes.
Rogelio Young, also known as Shakur Lamont Young, entered offices in northern Somerset County last fall in business-casual attire and stole tens of thousands of dollars in workplace technology equipment, often in full view of numerous employees, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne J. Forrest said.
Young, 40, was so successful because of his uncanny ability to blend in with his surroundings, earning his case the moniker 'Operation Complex Chameleon,' Forrest said.
Young was arrested early in Decemeber and charged with 15 counts of burglary and theft in various counties, following a four-month investigation.
According to the prosecutor, Young would show up at an office dressed for work with a large shoulder bag and slip in through an unlocked door or wait until an employee opened a door to enter or leave.
Once inside, he would walk through the office, stealing laptop computers, projectors, flat-screen televisions and other expensive electronic items, police said.
Police said businesses in Bedminster, Bernards, Woodbridge, South Plainfield, Piscataway, Paramus and River Edge were burglarized by Young.
When he was caught at an office complex on Route 1 in Woodbridge, he was using a handtruck to cart out four computers at one time, Forrest said.
