NEW ZEALAND COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM SCHOOL Computer thefts devastate pupils - Hawkes Bay Today - Feb 13 2007 11:58AM - localnews: "Computer thefts devastate pupils

Staff and pupils at Heretaunga Intermediate, in Hastings are 'gutted' after thieves smashed two windows and stole three new computers in two separate burglaries, at the weekend.

The new iMacs were taken when the burglars struck on Friday and Sunday nights.

The 16 computers arrived last month for the new school year. Each computer cost about $3000.

"We work hard to provide for students and when certain parts of the community take from us it makes life difficult," Mr Lunny said.

Three new computers were on the way although they had been funded with money that could have been spent elsewhere, he said.

Year 7 and 8 teacher Joy Doggett said the pupils were left frustrated by the theft.

Not only were the thefts disheartening, but they also hindered learning, she said.

"They (pupils) are devastated as it has pushed our whole programme back."

Pupils share one computer per two pupils and learn how to design websites, make movies and animations.

Children apply to become part of the digital classroom.

Mrs Doggett said it provided a different type of learning and to have the purpose of the room snatched away was disappointing.

However, the thieves may have got more than they bargained for, as the computers are password sensitive and will, effectively, be worthless.

Detective Darren Pritchard of Hastings CIB said anyone who was approached to buy the distinctive computers should contact police.

Anyone with information on the burglaries should contact Hastings police 873 0500 or the confidential crimeline on 0800 567 789.
