THUGS yesterday broke into the Ministry of Works offices on Old Port Bell road and made off with computers worth millions of shillings.

A guard attached to Nile Guards, Okenge Ojok, is suspected to be behind the robbery that paralysed business at the offices.

Ojok, who was on duty, allegedly left his gun behind following the robbery.

Jinja Road Police chief Joel Aguma said: “The unidentified people also broke into the minister’s (John Nasasira) office.”

The ministry spokesperson, Susan Kataike, noted: “
They broke into the minister’s office and took a whole set of a computer.

“They
also took the secretary’s computer among other items. Members of staff cannot get into their offices as investigations are still going on.”

The thugs also stole a television set and an undisclosed amount of money from the minister’s office and the adjoining office.

They ransacked all the drawers, which they emptied and littered the offices with papers and files.

Over 10 central processing units, which contained vital information, were stolen from the line offices.
Aguma announced that they had arrested a suspect but did not disclose his name on grounds that it would jeopardise investigations.

“We hope to arrest all those who participated in this robbery,” he warned.

Police detectives were dispatched to the scene by 11.00am.

One of them, who had a camera and wore white gloves, scrutinised windows and doors as he collected finger prints.

The ministry employees stood in groups in the courtyard as they discussed the incident.

“We cannot get into the offices. We were told that the Police have to carry out their investigations before we get to our work stations,” one of them lamented.

The Jinja Road Police chief explained that the employees would only get into their offices after thorough examination of the premises.
