Amity Twp., PA - A Pottstown man was arrested Thursday on charges he stole computer and office furniture valued at about $10,000 while he worked for an Amity Township company.
John D. Shackleton III, 51, was committed to Berks County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail after arraignment before District Judge Victor M. Frederick IV on theft and related charges.
Shackleton also was arraigned on arrest warrants from Scranton and Hanover Township, Luzerne County, on charges that he stole a total of $71,000 while he worked at two other businesses last year.
Amity police said Shackleton stole eight computers and six office chairs in November and December by creating phony invoices for sales while he worked at Wrigley’s Office Supply, 231 Old Philadelphia Pike.
He told police he sold the items to get money, investigators said.
He stole about $55,000 from a Hanover Township couple who were clients of the company, investigators said.
Shackleton told the couple, John and Meghan Goodwin, who were opening a restaurant, that he was going into business for himself and could supply them with equipment and furnishings for a better price than Swift Pullman.
He convinced them to give him about $55,000 and left the area without providing them what he promised, police said.
Scranton police said Shackleton took about $16,000 in a similar scam in September while employed by another office supply business, Jay’s Business Systems.
