Children shocked as school hit by thieves
PUPILS at a Daventry school were left visibly shocked after learning thieves had stolen up to £2,500 of computer equipment from their school this week.
Youngsters at Falconers Hill Junior School were told on Monday that four computers worth around £600 each had been taken some time over the weekend when burglars broke in by smashing two windows.Headteacher Pam Marston said: "It's sad. The computers were brand new in the summer and we had saved up for them for a long time.
"They were used for catch-up programmes for children who weren't as far ahead with their spelling and maths as other children.
"Our technician is also off at the moment so even if we had the money to replace them we could not get them up and running."
The school was burgled last year too, when more electronic devices were stolen.
Ms Marston continued: "The children have been very upset by it this time because they work in a nice school. Of course, it was the start of SATS week and Monday was a very depressing day because we all work so hard for the children. Then this happens."
As well as stealing the computers, the burglars also managed to break the window mechanisms meaning these had to be replaced on Tuesday.
Sixty children were directly affected by the break-in and were forced to work in other parts of the school.
Ms Marston added: "The children are very dispirited. It's like if you get burgled at home – you know somebody has been in your personal space.
"They were quite visibly offended, particularly as we bring them up to treat things with respect."
Falconer's Hill was one of two schools to be targeted over the weekend.
There was also an attempted burglary at Southbrook Junior School in Daventry where a window was smashed but no-one entered the building.
Police say they are linking the two incidents and have asked anyone who may have information about either crime to contact them on 08453 700700 or give information to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
All the equipment was clearly marked with the school's address and was stolen between 6pm on Friday and 8am on Monday.
