JOHANNESBURG -

Computer thieves who have been very active recently in Johannesburg have struck again – this time at schools.

A spate of break-ins along 4th Avenue, Parkhurst, occurred earlier this year which saw criminals breaking into businesses, ignoring all other valuables, and going straight for the computers.

In the space of two weeks, Greenside Primary and Greenside High School were broken into and their computers stolen. While the primary school lost 20 computers, the high school was struck twice.

The first time, eight computers were stolen the night before the matric computer exam. Teachers and staff pulled together by working through the night and most of the morning and managed to set up enough computers for the exam.

Shortly before the second part of the exam was meant to take place, however, the thieves struck again – this time escaping with 44computers.

“It was very stressful,” Principal Nicky Whyte said, “as this time we didn’t have enough computers to bring in from other departments.”

The school is now installing a state-of-the-art security system. – CNS.
